A dramatic gas explosion leveled a home and severely damaged nearby properties in Hayward Thursday morning, sending six people to local hospitals. The moment was captured on a doorbell camera, showing a massive plume of smoke and fire erupting across the neighborhood.
Explosion Destroys Home and Injures Residents
The blast occurred on East Lewelling Boulevard, where firefighters discovered one house completely destroyed and two additional structures heavily damaged. Six victims were rushed to hospitals, with at least one confirmed in stable condition. Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Nishimoto described the scene as “significant devastation,” highlighting the intensity of the explosion and its impact on neighboring homes.
Earlier in the morning, authorities reported that two residents might be missing, but by 3:30 p.m., all individuals had been accounted for, according to the Alameda County Fire Department.
Gas Line Rupture Reported as Cause
Preliminary reports from Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) indicate the explosion resulted from an underground gas line damaged by a third-party contractor digging nearby. PG&E was notified about the damaged line around 7:35 a.m., and crews arrived on-site, but the explosion occurred approximately 9:35 a.m.
Gas had leaked from multiple points, and although crews stopped the flow roughly 10 minutes before the blast, remaining pressure contributed to the destructive explosion.
Emergency Response and Road Closures
The Hayward Fire Department deployed 75 firefighters, including battalion chiefs, along with 8 engines and 2 ladder trucks, to contain the fire.
The California Highway Patrol closed the southbound I-238 off-ramp at East 14th Street and portions of Mission Boulevard and Paradise Boulevard to facilitate emergency operations. Drone and citizen footage captured massive smoke and structural damage throughout the area.
Officials and Agencies Respond
Hayward Mayor Mark Salinas confirmed coordination with PG&E and local authorities, emphasizing concern for residents.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has dispatched a team to investigate the incident. Meanwhile, the Red Cross is assisting families displaced by the fire. Alameda County Fire crews will remain on-site overnight to monitor hotspots and support ongoing investigations.
Doorbell Camera Footage Highlights Danger
The video footage has circulated online, emphasizing the risks associated with underground gas lines and the importance of reporting damaged utilities immediately. PG&E reminded the public to take safety precautions when working near gas infrastructure.
