Sarah Gamal is paving the way for many! The 32-year-old will be officiating the 3-on-3 basketball games at the Olympics making her the first Arab and African woman to do so.

The Olympics is set to take place in Tokyo from Friday, 23 Jul 2021 to Sunday, 8 Aug 2021.

Officiating male athletes, the Egyptian referee stated: “I have refereed men’s games in the past and I have had a lot of success running them which garnered the confidence of Egypt’s refereeing committee… It’s the usual for me.”

She began playing basketball at 5-years-old.

Speaking to AFP, Sarah said, “Being the first Arab and African woman refereeing 3-on-3 games at the Olympics is a positive. There’s no pressure on me and I am confident that this step will pave the way for other Arab and African women referees.”
