Just like the fairy godmother said, anything’s possible. The 1997 TV movie, “Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella,” will be coming to Disney Plus. It will drop on “the stroke of midnight” on Feb. 12 (2021).
Brandy Norwood (who played Cinderella) announced the film’s re-release on Disney Plus on ABC’s “The View” during a zoom call with Whoopi Goldberg (who played the Queen) on Thursday (Feb 4th).
“I’m so excited that ‘Cinderella’ has a home now at Disney Plus, and we can celebrate, and share, and inspire a whole new generation,” Norwood said.
The movie is based on Rodgers and Hammerstein’s 1957 television and later stage musical, “Cinderella.” It contains enchanting songs like “Ten Minutes Ago,” “Do I Love You Because You’re Beautiful?” and “Impossible.” The film also stars Whitney Houston, Victor Garber, Paolo Montalban, Bernadette Peters, Natalie Desselle-Reid, and Jason Alexander.
The diversity and talent of this cast made this movie a fan favorite. It also received seven Emmy award nominations. However, it’s a bit hard to find. Fans have been begging for Disney to release it in a more accessible format for years.
Debra Martin Chase, the movie producer, heard fans’ requests. When Disney Plus was up and running, Chase reached out to the president of the streaming service. They worked through outstanding rights issues so the movie could be included in its programming.
“It is so rewarding that over 25 years later, our Cinderella is still relevant and beloved,” Chase said to Variety.
The movie will be a part of the “Celebrate Black Stories” on Disney Plus, inspiring new generations and old generations alike.
